Mailchimp vs. GetResponse: Which Email Marketing Tool is better?

Are you struggling to choose between GetResponse and MailChimp, two of the most popular email marketing platforms? While Mailchimp used to be a go-to choice, its acquisition by Intuit resulted in significant price increases and the phasing out of some useful features.

In this article, I will provide an in-depth comparison of Mailchimp vs. GetResponse, to help you determine which tool best suits your needs.

To sum it up, GetResponse offers better value for money in practically every price category. Mailchimp's platform, on the other hand, provides far less customization, limiting your creativity in terms of marketing automation actions and the number of specialized audiences to whom you can send your newsletter.

1. User interface

Let's look at the overall user interface. To guarantee that I had the same experience, I created new accounts on both email marketing platforms.

GetResponse

GetResponse vs. Mailchimp comparison. Picture shows the GetResponse dashboard with the Tools listed unfolded.
GetResponse dashboard with the Tools listed unfolded
GetResponse has a quick, contemporary, and user-friendly interface that is simple to utilize. Even if you've never used other marketing tools before, you'll soon figure out how to utilize them and be ready to begin your campaigns.

With only a few clicks, you can assess the performance of your campaigns or launch a new one. The Quick Actions widget is very useful since it allows you to execute some of the most crucial tasks, such as sending an email or popup, adding new contacts, or initiating a marketing automation pipeline.

If you want to explore the features more traditionally, simply click on the Tools menu at the top to access all the tools.
Customizable Quick Actions widget lets you quickly perform your key marketing activities.

Pro tip: When you first join GetResponse, you can choose between exploring the platform on your own or following the interactive lesson. If you're new to the tool or email marketing in general, I strongly recommend the latter. The lesson will guide you through the most crucial functions, such as producing and delivering your first newsletter.

Mailchimp

Mailchimp dashboard with the tools list unfolded.
Mailchimp dashboard with the tools list unfolded
Mailchimp also has a fast, clear, and intuitive user interface. In my perspective, there are two significant distinctions between this and the GetResponse dashboard.

First and foremost, the Mailchimp interface has a more traditional feel. If you love this look, you'll enjoy using this app.

Second, the navigation menu shows the available tools in a new way. To access client information in GetResponse, navigate to Contacts and select the appropriate tab. In Mailchimp, however, you can view all of the available capabilities straight away. Instead of merely viewing the Audience category, you now see a list of eight features relating to this topic.

At first glance, this may appear to be a smart menu organization strategy. If your users can access the required function with one click rather than two, that's a win, right? In this situation, I do not believe so. While the tools are organized into logical categories (such as Campaigns and Audiences), the sheer quantity of accessible alternatives might be bewildering, with about 40 tools shown on the menu. As a result, you may have to scroll down to view them all.

Verdict: Tie

Both systems have simple interfaces that allow users to launch campaigns and use all capabilities with ease. The user interfaces offer distinct feels and aesthetics, but in my perspective, there is no obvious victor here. Also, even if the tools are shown differently on both platforms, I don't believe this is a deal-breaker.

2. Email marketing

GetResponse and Mailchimp are commonly used for email marketing. Let's examine their skills and see if they meet our requirements.

GetResponse

GetResponse is a comprehensive email marketing service that offers a wide range of email marketing features for creating and sending various types of emails.
  • One-off campaigns, called Newsletters
  • Automated drip campaigns, called Autoresponders
  • Automated RSS feed emails, called RSS-to-email
  • Automated emails triggered by various conditions and actions, called Automation messages
  • Automated emails referring to transactional events, called Transactional emails

You can access them by going to the Tools menu and choosing the relevant feature (e.g., Automation for Automation messages).

GetResponse regularly adds new tools to help you create email messages quickly and efficiently. In addition to over 100 pre-built email templates and a user-friendly drag-and-drop email builder, the platform also offers AI-powered tools, including a subject line generator and an email builder. These features allow you to launch your email campaigns in no time.
AI subject line generator creates captivating subject lines in seconds.

GetResponse is an email marketing platform that offers various features to optimize your email campaigns. You can test up to five messages at a time using A/B testing and find the best send times using Time Travel and Perfect Timing tools. Our research indicates that using these technologies can result in click-through rates up to 40% higher than average, and improved deliverability.
By default, GetResponse enables you to test both subject lines and email content using A/B testing. For more advanced optimization, you can use Automation to test your campaigns.
One of GetResponse's unique features is the Autoresponders function. Unlike other email marketing providers, you can create drip campaigns using a convenient calendar view, without needing to use Automation Builder. Calendar view lets you easily manage autoresponders
This shows marketers how many receivers there are at a particular stage and helps them visualize the flow of their email drip campaigns more effectively. It's especially helpful for email courses, onboarding procedures, and lead nurturing programs.

Mailchimp

Mailchimp is a software tool that helps you manage different types of email campaigns, such as transactional, automated, and periodic mailings. However, the automatic RSS-to-email feature that Mailchimp previously offered is no longer available in the new automation tool. Instead, you can add an RSS merge tag to your emails. However, this will not automatically start a campaign when a new blog post is published.

In addition, you can create a standard drip campaign using Mailchimp's Automation tool. To build your emails, you can use their drag-and-drop email builder. You have the option to choose from over 100 pre-built email themes. The email builder also has some useful tools, such as the message style editor and email preview, that allow you to see your merge tags. We will be discussing the email builder in more detail later.

As of recently, Mailchimp offers over 100 email templates out of the box

While Mailchimp can not generate AI subject lines, it does offer helpful advice on how many words, characters, or emojis to use in your subject lines. It isn't flawless, but it can help you enhance your email communication. Mailchimp has an A/B testing tool that lets you test your subject line, name, content, and send time (up to three versions at once). While it does not enable you to test as many variations as GetResponse, it does have a distinct feature that allows you to select a winning variant based on total income.

Mailchimp provides tips on how to write better subject lines

One thing I’ve found confusing and limiting in Mailchimp is that when you’re sending your email campaigns, you can only select one audience.

So, let’s say you’re a marketing agency that offers online programs and wants to launch a new course about Google Analytics 4.

You decided that you want to target your former students – people who’ve finished your email marketing and marketing analytics courses.

To send your campaign using Mailchimp, you’d have to create a new segment that combines all your students. Or you’d have to resend the same message multiple times, remembering to exclude overlapping subscribers.

In my opinion, that’s an unnecessary amount of work to do something that simple.

Verdict: GetResponse offers better email marketing features

Both Mailchimp and GetResponse are powerful email marketing platforms. Mailchimp has strong A/B testing and optimization capabilities, but it is less efficient when it comes to creating email campaigns. On the other hand, GetResponse offers more flexibility in choosing multiple audiences when sending your email marketing campaigns.

3. Email builder

We will now examine the email builders and templates of both email marketing tools in detail.

GetResponse

GetResponse provides an easy-to-use drag-and-drop email builder with over 100 pre-designed and customizable email templates. By using email templates, you can save a lot of time while working on your email marketing projects.

The templates are modern, mobile-responsive, and are categorized for different types of email marketing campaigns. Our users often give us positive feedback about the templates on sites like G2.

GetResponse provides customizable and mobile-responsive email templates. Additionally, they are an early adopter of AI-powered technology. The beta version of their AI subject line generator and AI email generator has reduced the time customers spend creating emails by an average of 85%.

The email creator enables users to customize emails in various ways. Users can add, save, and reuse different sections and blocks, which is particularly beneficial for those who work with email campaigns regularly.

GetResponse Email Creator comes with free images, GIFs from Giphy, and other useful tools

Experienced users will find it convenient to customize their emails for mobile devices. They can do this by hiding specific elements on mobile and rearranging columns when stacking elements on smaller screens.

Additionally, there are other valuable features available, such as the built-in Shutterstock and Giphy integrations. These allow you to quickly embed images into your emails without needing to purchase or download them if you don't have your own graphics.

Inside the email creator, you’ll find free images and direct integrations with Giphy and Shutterstock

GetResponse's email creator includes a spam check, inbox preview, dark mode preview, and mobile preview to ensure email marketing campaigns look great from any device.

Mailchimp

Mailchimp’s new email builder also comes with 100+ prebuilt email templates, however, free users can only access 7.

Free Mailchimp templates included in your account

Mailchimp offers a creative assistant solution that scans your website for CSS and images to create a custom template tailored to your specific needs. This is an incredibly practical solution, particularly if you already have an established brand book with fonts and styles that you want to use across all of your marketing channels.

Mailchimp’s creative assistant helps you create emails using your website’s styling

The email builder is designed with user-friendliness in mind, and it provides a wide range of building blocks to help you create your own emails. In addition to the usual elements that you can find in other email marketing services, it comes with integrated surveys and apps that are specifically tailored to local businesses. Additionally, it offers seamless integration with Canva, a popular design tool.

Mailchimp’s email editor features a Giphy integration and other valuable built-in tools

The email editor of Mailchimp lacks free images, so you will have to create all your marketing assets elsewhere. This may be a concern for many small businesses that do not have in-house designers.

One of the most impressive features of Mailchimp is the styles editor, which allows you to easily adjust the styling of all individual elements of your messages, such as headers, paragraphs, or buttons. Although it may not be practical when reusing existing templates, it is very useful when setting up your first campaign or modifying it for the season.

Lastly, the email builder only provides a simple email preview. If you want to check how your message looks in dark mode or how it displays in different mailboxes, this preview may not be the best option.

Verdict: Tie

Both Mailchimp and GetResponse provide email builders and templates that can help you with your email marketing needs. However, there are some differences. For instance, Mailchimp requires users to upgrade to a paid plan to access its templates, whereas GetResponse offers well-designed, modern, and mobile-responsive templates to all users, regardless of their plan. Therefore, it is recommended to sign up for a free account with both platforms and test their features to determine which one works best for your specific needs.

4. Marketing automation

Let's continue the comparison between Mailchimp and GetResponse by looking at their marketing automation features.

GetResponse

GetResponse's Marketing Automation offers the ability to create automated workflows that provide relevant communication to your audience at every stage of their customer journey.

You can either choose from over 40 pre-built templates for marketing automation workflows or create your own from scratch. These templates are categorized based on their objectives, such as welcoming new subscribers, qualifying leads, engaging and retaining customers, and more.

Prebuilt marketing automation workflow templates in GetResponse

Once you select your desired workflow template, you'll enter the automation builder arena and be able to customize it by adding or editing elements to your journey.

You’ll be able to choose from the following:
  • 19 conditions – for example, if subscribed, if the cart is abandoned, if the event
  • 12 actions – for example, send a message, send a web push notification, send SMS
  • 7 filters – for example, amount, dynamic segment, consent status
To create your workflow, you can simply drag and drop individual building blocks and connect them with a node. After that, you can customize the settings of each block according to your needs. Although this process is fairly simple, every block has multiple settings, so it may take some time to set things up.

The real power of the GetResponse automation lies in the dynamic segment filter and tags. Using these blocks, you can target your audience with sniper-like accuracy and communicate with them as you wish.

Mailchimp

Mailchimp's marketing automation solution shares certain similarities with GetResponse's platform. However, the former has an edge over the latter in terms of the number of templates it offers. With Mailchimp, you can choose from nearly 90 templates to create your automated workflows or build them from scratch. The templates are segmented based on their purpose, such as finding and welcoming new contacts, nurturing leads, re-engaging contacts, and supporting and managing contacts.

Mailchimp’s automation templates gallery

Based on the organization of Mailchimp's templates gallery, it seems that they prioritize the integration of your Mailchimp campaigns with other marketing apps. Among the available templates, you can find workflows that enable you to add new contacts from a Google sheet via Zapier. This feature is highly practical and can also be found in GetResponse, but in their case, it needs to be managed via integrations rather than the Marketing Automation editor.

Mailchimp’s automation builder with a loaded template that lets you add new contacts from Google Sheets via Zapier

I am sorry, but there are no spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors in the original text. However, I can help you rewrite the text to make it clearer. Here's my attempt:

When it comes to Mailchimp's marketing automation, the interface appears to be more user-friendly than that of GetResponse. Mailchimp's pre-designed templates are straightforward and suggest their intended use, such as sending abandoned cart emails for high-value products.

Mailchimp's automation only allows you to create workflows for targeted emails, contact information updates, or moving contacts to other workflows. However, there is a beta feature called Webhooks that aims to enable the targeting of contacts through other marketing channels.

In terms of presentation, Mailchimp's automation templates have a better visual appeal. The names, categories, and descriptions of the templates make the process of selecting the appropriate template more straightforward.

On the other hand, GetResponse's solution is more powerful with built-in features for web push notifications, SMS messages, and multi-channel capabilities. If you are a Shopify store owner or a B2B that requires multi-channel capabilities, GetResponse would be your ideal choice.

While Mailchimp's marketing automation editor allows you to use webhooks, certain elements may limit your options. For example, the “time delay” element only allows you to specify the number of hours, days, or weeks before the next step starts.

Mailchimp’s time delay lets you postpone the next step by N weeks/days/hours

In GetResponse, on the other hand, you can also choose to “wait” until a specific time/day or wait till the next “nth day of a month.” Thanks to this, you can time your automated campaigns better and develop more complex scenarios.

GetResponse’s wait element lets you postpone the next step in multiple other ways

5. Signup forms

Signup forms and popups are crucial elements of any email marketing plan. Without them, you won't be able to build your email list, and therefore, you won't have anyone to send your campaigns to. In this section of the Mailchimp vs. GetResponse comparison, I have compared their signup form builders.

GetResponse

GetResponse has launched an updated version of its forms and popups builder. This new version can compete with some of the standalone popup tools available on the market.

GetResponse Forms and Popups Creator featuring multiple templates and building blocks

GetResponse offers a variety of pre-built templates to create sign-up forms. These templates are available in different shapes and sizes, including pop-up boxes, full-screen popups, top bars, slide-in boxes, and embedded forms. They have been designed to cater to various use cases.
  • Growing your email list
  • Getting more sales
  • Staying connected
  • Getting feedback
  • Marking the occasion
When using the forms and popups builder, you have access to various building blocks such as promo codes, images, videos, countdown timers, and signup forms. The drag-and-drop builder is modern and comprehensive, similar to other builders found in GetResponse.

GetResponse forms and popup templates come in all shapes and forms

This tool is particularly helpful because of its powerful targeting options that allow you to show popups based on a variety of conditions and triggers. For instance, you can present a popup containing a unique promotion code to individuals who have visited a specific product page several times or have added a specific quantity of items to their shopping cart.

GetResponse popup trigger settings

Mailchimp

Mailchimp also offers a built-in solution to create signup forms and popups.

Similarly to their email builder, the form builder only includes several templates and looks slightly outdated.

Mailchimp popup editor and templates

Although templates can be helpful, they have limitations when it comes to design flexibility. You can only use the elements included in the template, and cannot add additional features like videos, countdown timers, or social media icons. If you want to include these elements, it's better to use another tool.

Additionally, the targeting options are limited. There are only a few preset display rules, and you can't target specific audiences such as desktop users or users visiting your website from a particular country.

Verdict: GetResponse offers more advanced forms and popups

If you're in search of a reliable signup form solution, look no further than GetResponse. With a vast variety of templates and advanced targeting tools, it is the clear winner in this category. Although both GetResponse and Mailchimp offer integration with popular form builders like Wisepops or Optimonk, if you prefer a single solution, GetResponse should be your go-to choice.

6. Landing pages

It’s time we looked at the landing page builders offered by Mailchimp and GetResponse. Both offer a drag-and-drop editor, but are they equally powerful? We’re about to find out.

GetResponse

GetResponse lets you create multi-page websites as well as standalone landing pages.

Its Landing Page Creator comes packed with many predesigned landing page templates The Landing Page Creator includes pre-designed templates and an AI builder to create custom landing pages. es and an AI builder that’ll automatically build a landing page tailored to your needs.

GetResponse Landing Page Creator lets you build landing pages in moments

The drag-and-drop editor you’ll see here is pretty robust. You can design your landing pages using a range of elements like:
  • Text
  • Images
  • Buttons
  • Galleries
  • Videos
  • Countdown time
  • Membership ara
  • Social sharing icons
  • Product boxes
  • Signup form
  • Contact form
  • Webinar signup form
  • Custom code
  • Etc.
Landing Page Creator lets you create highly customizable landing pages

GetResponse has a global design tool that allows you to customize your landing page's color palette, typography, button styling, and more. You can preview your landing page on desktop and mobile devices in real time. Moreover, you can choose to hide specific elements from appearing on mobile screens.

You can also customize your landing page's SEO settings such as indexing, title, and meta description, and assign your own domain.

What's unique about GetResponse is that it provides its own tools such as live chats and webinars which you can easily add to your landing page without integrating any external tools.

Overall, GetResponse is a good tool, though not as intuitive as some other dedicated landing page builders. However, it comes with many neat features such as built-in Unsplash and Shutterstock integrations, live chats, and webinars.

GetResponse Landing Pages come with free images from Unsplash, Shutterstock, and Giphy

Mailchimp

In your Mailchimp account, you’ll find an intuitive drag-and-drop builder that’ll let you set up landing pages in moments.

It comes with several landing page templates and various elements you can add as your building blocks. Within your landing pages, you’ll be able to use the following:
  • Text
  • Images
  • Buttons
  • Image cards
  • Image galleries
  • Social media icons
  • Products and payments
  • Videos
  • About
  • Quote
  • Contact
Mailchimp’s website builder offers an easy solution to add appointments or generate leads

If we compare the number of available elements in Mailchimp's landing page builder and GetResponse, the latter offers more options. However, Mailchimp's landing page builder is still a good tool for generating leads. It's easier to add appointments or create a store with Mailchimp, but unfortunately, both features will be phased out in February 2024. Advanced users from more demanding industries may miss elements like the countdown timer or custom code.

The lack of the custom code element may be especially problematic for some users who would like to integrate their landing pages with external tools and apps using Javascript code. For instance, it would be impossible to insert a PayPal purchase button or use heatmaps from Hotjar without a custom code.

Apart from that, Mailchimp's builder has a styling editor that allows users to customize different parts of their landing pages with ease. Additionally, a creative assistant is available to help users design their marketing assets such as images.
Mailchimp’s landing pages come with free images from Unsplash

Regarding images, Mailchimp comes with a built-in integration with Unsplash, which is very useful if you do not have your own marketing assets.

Overall, Mailchimp's landing page builder is an intuitive and reliable tool. Although it may not offer some of the more advanced features found in GetResponse or standalone page builders, it will suffice for marketers who wish to promote an ebook or their newsletter.

Verdict: If you have more complex needs, choose GetResponse, but for basic marketing needs, Mailchimp is a good option.

Once again, we have two excellent tools that can assist you in capturing email addresses and running digital marketing campaigns effectively.

When it comes to the user interface, Mailchimp provides a simpler and easier experience that is easier to learn. If you prefer a straightforward approach, then Mailchimp is a good option to consider.

However, if you require more advanced features for your landing page creation, such as a countdown timer, membership area, or custom code, then GetResponse Landing Page Creator is the better option to go for. If you want to enhance your lead generation efforts, then it's worth considering GetResponse for landing page creation.

7. Multichannel marketing

Let’s continue this GetResponse vs. Mailchimp comparison by looking at the multichannel marketing capabilities of both tools.

GetResponse

GetResponse is known as an email marketing service, but it offers so much more!

The built-in tools let you:

  • Create landing pages
  • Create popups and forms
  • Create advanced segments
  • Set up automated campaigns using emails, SMS, and web push notifications
  • Set up on-page product recommendations
  • Run paid ads on Facebook, Instagram, and Google
  • Organize webinars
  • Set up conversion funnels
  • Set up live chats
  • Create social media posts
  • Access your campaigns via the mobile app
Whether you want to grow your email list, promote your new offers, or connect with your audience in real time – you can do that with GetResponse.

GetResponse Conversion Funnel helps you connect your marketing activities, like landing pages, webinars, autoresponders, and more.

By utilizing paid ads, you can effectively steer traffic toward your landing pages, exposing your offerings to a new audience.

Use built-in webinar software to show off your expertise, build an audience, and sell your products

The two main advantages of having all these tools under one roof are that it’s more cost-efficient than paying for multiple platforms and that they’re already connected to each other with no need for any third-party integrations.

Mailchimp

Mailchimp also offers multichannel marketing capabilities, although they’re different from the ones provided by GetResponse.

Aside from running email marketing projects using Mailchimp, you can

  • Create landing pages
  • Create popups and forms
  • Create segments
  • Create surveys
  • Set up automated campaigns using emails and webhooks
  • Run paid ads on Facebook and Instagram
  • Create and schedule social media posts
  • Manage your contacts in CRM
  • Create and send postcards
  • Access your campaigns via the mobile app

You can send postcards directly from your Mailchimp account
You can promote your services using Mailchimp’s websites

Verdict: Tie

I can assist you in comparing GetResponse and Mailchimp, the two popular email marketing platforms. The choice between the two will depend on the built-in tools that you would like to use for your business growth.

If you want to use conversion funnels, webinars, SMS, web push notifications, product recommendations, live chats, or Google ads to boost your business, then GetResponse is the way to go. Many B2B and D2C e-commerce companies are shifting from Mailchimp to GetResponse.

On the other hand, if you want to promote your business using surveys, postcards, CRM, organic social media posts, and webhooks, then Mailchimp would be a better choice for you.

Both platforms integrate with hundreds of other applications via plugins, APIs, or integration software like Zapier. So, if you prefer to use different tools to carry out specific tasks, you can do it via integration.

Let's talk about the pricing plans of both platforms. Both GetResponse and Mailchimp offer several paid plans, providing you with different features. The plans' starting price increases as your contact list grows.

GetResponse offers 6 pricing plans:

GetResponse offers discounts for annual and biannual plans, as well as non-profits.

Verdict: GetResponse is more cost-effective

The best way to compare GetResponse and Mailchimp pricing is to look at individual plans side by side.

As you may remember from the beginning of the comparison, here’s how the two platforms measure against each other in terms of pricing.

GetResponse Customer Support gets an above 95% customer satisfaction rate

GetResponse has won multiple awards for its Customer Service. And it’s no surprise as it has an above 95% customer satisfaction rate, an average first response time of 65 seconds, and it’s available 24/7.
Some of the awards our Customer Support Team won

  • Free plan: live chat and email support for the first 30 days
  • Email marketing, Marketing automation, and e-commerce marketing: live chat 24/7 and email support

  • MAX2: live chat 24/7, email support, phone support, specialized onboarding, and dedicated customer experience manager
In addition to a team of experts available to support you, GetResponse provides a comprehensive Help Center filled with tutorials, video guides, and a vast Webinar Library.

Mailchimp

Customer support is also an important part of Mailchimp’s platform. It’s got a 92% customer satisfaction rate and is available 24/7.

Mailchimp Customer Support awards and satisfaction rate of 92%
Depending on your plan, you’ll get a different level of support:
  • Free plan: email support for the first 30 days
  • Essentials, Standard: live chat 24/7, email support, and assisted onboarding
  • Premium: phone support, live chat 24/7, email support, dedicated onboarding
In addition, Mailchimp also offers a Help Center with helpful documentation and tutorials. However, compared to GetResponse, it offers fewer video tutorials and webinars.

Verdict: Tie

In terms of support, Mailchimp and GetResponse go head to head.

The key differences are:

Mailchimp's free plan does not include live chat support, while GetResponse's free plan does. On the other hand, Mailchimp offers a scheduled assisted onboarding call in its paid plans, which is not available with GetResponse. If you opt for GetResponse's MAX2 plan, you'll have access to a dedicated customer experience manager, which is not possible with Mailchimp. Regardless of which platform you choose, you can rest assured that you'll be in good hands.

Mailchimp vs. GetResponse: Conclusion

After going through this comparison guide of GetResponse and Mailchimp, it's time for you to decide which email marketing service is the best fit for your business. Your answer may vary depending on your business model and target audience.

This comparison shows that choosing Mailchimp, the more popular option comes at a higher price for less customization. On the other hand, GetResponse offers more flexibility in almost every feature area we've explored. So if you want to fully customize your marketing campaigns to suit your creative ideas, GetResponse is the better choice.

At the end of the day, most marketing trends for 2023 point to customization, especially combined with AI-powered automation, already being an absolutely essential part of a successful marketing process. Pre-configured, static workflow settings and templates are already becoming a thing of the past.
